Our green policies:
We are proud that Chez Sven was the first bed & breakfast on the Outer Cape to promote eco-tourism and do our very best to maintain a healthy, chemical-free environment. Due to Sven’s allergies, we have always kept both Seagull Cottage and Liberty Coin Suite as allergen-free as possible, following guidelines established by the Green Hotels Association. We are also committed to conserving energy and reducing waste. Indeed, we encourage guests to join in this effort. As eco-tourism becomes more popular, we look forward to the time when other Cape establishments adopt the principles we embraced from the start.
-We provide 100% natural amenities. -We use only “green” cleaning products. -We do not use chemical fertilizers ever, just compost and well-rotted manure. -We provide 100% organic cotton bed linens. (Hypoallergenic comforters and pillows are available for anyone allergic to down.) -We recycle plastics, bottles, and cardboard at the Wellfleet Transfer Station. -We have one rule here: no smoking and no pets. -We purchased a high efficiency, frontloading washing machine as soon as it became available. We wash our cotton sheets with environmentally-friendly washing powder and line-dry whenever possible. Ditto for washing towels, which spin with dryer balls, not chemicals. -The Hepa filters in our vacuum help maintain air-quality.
Our rooms smell sweet. Only 100% natural room freshener is used.
Cape Cod is like a large sandbar and has a fragile ecosystem. Every property in Wellfleet has its own well and septic. Ours is a Title-5. We test our water on a regular basis and all drinking water passes through Pur filters.
There are extra towels available, but we encourage guests to conserve water and energy by using what we provide. We will supply a change of sheets after three days for guests who request it.
We use low-energy light bulbs. We ask that Seagull Cottage guests lower the thermostat while they are out exploring Wellfleet and switch off the outdoor lights when not in use.
We do our best to provide organic food. Sandy bakes her own bread and uses organic ingredients for her homemade granola. Our free-trade coffee and tea are organic, too. Sandy’s fabulous organic yogurt is homemade. We have planted our own raspberry bushes and will soon have organic raspberries. We grow our own organic tomatoes and potatoes, available to guests who desire a “Swedish breakfast.”
While we will start fires in the Seagull Cottage fireplace to welcome guests in winter, we admit our concern about air pollution and the burning of fossil fuels, as they contribute to climate change.
We especially welcome eco-tourists and maintain an environmental shelf in our international library with the latest books for their reading pleasure. It is our hope that guests will come away with some eco-friendly ideas to use in their own homes.
Disclaimer: Although Chez Sven Bed and Breakfast tries its best to provide a healthy, chemical-free environment for all guests, we do not pretend to be perfect, but we will continue to improve and expand our efforts for the health and enjoyment of our guests.
